Jerry was a great friend. We spent many hours together playing tennis and enjoying happy hour, where we solved most of the world’s problems. I was fortunate to get to see him and Ann as they drove to their Panama Canal cruise. My sincere condolences go out to Ann, Dorannne and the rest of his loving family. RIP my friend.

Jerry was a great officer and super friend over the years since I first met him during the SSEB for the APACHE TADS/PNVS. Was fortunate to work with him both in the Army and in retirement.

- Jerry P Mellick, Spokane Valley, WA

I will traveling in Texas training soldiers but I know that Col Hipp will understand. He will always be a great hero.

Ann, please accept our sincere condolences. Jerry was one great and sincere friend, as well as a great warrior, dedicated and courageous officer and aviator; a true patriot. Our days together during our Fort McPherson era were far too few, but the intensity and sincereity of the man and the impression he conveyed is everlasting. God rest this grand and blessed man. He was one of our own, one of us: fellow Pennsylvanian, a fellow "Brothers' Boy" and fellow Cavalry Trooper who presence screamed brotherhood. As grateful Americans we pause and salute a brave man who was willing to sacrifice; put his life on the line for his country, his family and his God. May he rest in peace and as our Funeral Mass Liturgy will announce; "his life has not ended, merely changed" and as we were together once, we will be together again warmly embranced in the arms of our Heavenly Father. We are so very saddened by the loss of our dear friend and neighbor. When we moved to the Landings, Jerry and Ann were the first people to welcome us to our new home. We immediately became friends and always enjoyed our neighborhood get-togethers as well as the Hipp’s annual Savannah St. Patrick’s Day gatherings in Layfatte Square. We honor his service to our country and will always cherish his friendship. Sincerely, June and Steve Hernandez

Ann, Thomas, and Doranne, With deepest sympathy on the loss of your husband and father. Having had the opportunity to work for Jerry in Heidelberg, work with him in Saint Louis, and continue to work with him following his retirement from active duty he was a talented supervisor, tremendous mentor, and good friend. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him. Ray and Mary Lowman

Kevin and I are heartbroken hearing about Jerry's passing. He was one of our nation's finest military heroes, but also a fine and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Jerry quietly lived his faith, with Ann by his side. He was always the life of the party, of which there were many, and always ready to share a good scotch with Kevin, and a screwdriver with me! It was a privilege to call Jerry our friend.

A candle has been lit!

I was on Jerry's tennis team not long after moving back to Savannah in 2001. He was a great guy and I considered him a friend even though we had many spirited political discussions over the years! God rest you, Jerry, you will be missed by many. Love to Ann and the family

Jerry was a great person, coach, & role model to me and 8 other LaSalle rowers who won the Dad Vail championship in 1962. I was the coxswain & he gave 9 young men memories of a life time. He played a most important part in our lives.

- Bucky Durney, Morristown, NJ

I met Jerry during the wedding of Mike & Erin Blumel inCleveland and he kept me up on the ceremony. He also provided a bottle of White Label to share upon getting back to the Hampton Inn. (Others helped us drain the bottle). Of course, I just saw Jerry at Paula's Cousin Get together in MN. No one he spoke with, could have been further left from his opinions than me, but he was always easy to talk with and generally good natured. Also, I am glad he fought for me in Vietnam; I was sent to Germany. The bad guys got a bad deal out of that arrangement. My sincerest condolences to Ann and Doranne and all those who were close to Jerry. George S Leibson, NYC, NY (significant other to Constance Class, Jerry's cousin

Doranne and Ann, I am so very sorry for your loss. Jerry was a great man and I will always remember the many get togethers and conversation we had over the past few years. Unfortunately I never got to play tennis with him as we often joked about but I always enjoyed his sense of humor and energy. He will definitely be missed.
